About Gagan Mahal, Anegundi

Gagan Mahal is a 16th-century Vijayanagara pavilion built in the Indo-Islamic architectural style. It was constructed for women from the royal family to witness festivities in the village square. In memory of her late husband, Raja Durbar Shri Krishna Devaraya, Smt. Rani Lal Kumari Bai donated Gagan Mahal to the village Panchayat, which then used it as a local administrative office.

Architectural features

The pavilion has arched windows, decorated balconies, intricate stucco and cusped arched openings. Gagan Mahal was in a semi-ruined condition until the year 2022 and has been restored to how you see it today by the Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF)

Under the direction of the Bengaluru office of the Deccan Heritage Foundation (DHF), the restoration of the Gagan Mahal was completed in the summer of 2022. Now rehabilitated, the Gagan Mahal represents not only an outstanding example of sixteenth century Vijayanagara palace architecture, but is also, once again, the centre of village economic and social activity. The restored building is available to the local community for the enhancement of their skills and livelihood, re-establishing the plaza as the commercial hub of the village
